I know people keep saying this but really, I think Monahan would do fine as a third line center to start his career. He has the tools to be good at it and it would allow him to play more sheltered minutes against weaker defenders.
Besides, the whole idea that the third line is the "shut down" line only applies if the coach plays that way. We've had coaches that would match up 1st line vs. 1st line, which meant that the 1st line was also the shutdown line.
Monahan playing 3rd C minutes in the NHL this season would likely help him develop more than playing him in the WHL and at least with the Flames we could start exposing him to top 6 situations and special teams.
