If we waive Ramo and then send him to the minors, $1.85M of his salary stays on the Cap and he makes his entire NHL pay this season of $2.6M. I have no idea how Ramo would fare on waivers. Nor if ownership wants to spend $2.6M on a minor league goalie and use almost $2M in cap space that has no impact on improving the NHL club.
McDonald I could see being demoted without concern, as his salary is close enough to the $900K cap exemption that financial considerations wouldn't impact ownership or management. Losing him on waivers would be the risk, but again that's probably small - mind you we acquired him that way ourselves last season.
So in a sense, it's probably possible. I can't imagine it is being seriously considered at all at this time. We'll see how preseason unfolds.
