I was there in '09, I found it to be kind of a strange place, but fun in a way. Had lots of 'friendly' people trying to talk to me, usually asking me where I am from. Of course when I would say "Canada" they know someone from Toronto or Vancouver. One time, by the Petronas Towers it was two attractive ladies and they tried to convince me to get in a cab with them. Best just to ignore strangers in the the tourist areas.
Also some bars are mainly filled with Eastern European prostitutes and I had to do some exploring to find good bars to go to. The reggae travelers bar in chinatown was cool.
If you like history Melacca is pretty cool, Dutch colonial buildings and maritime museums. Admiral Zheng He stopped there on his voyage to Africa, so there's lots of stuff about him too.
