Yes, only the original U2s were built in Germany.

The U2s were a German design by a company called Duwag, and the U2 design was actually used for years before Calgary's system was even built, primarily on the German U-bahn system. It's now a 50 year-old design and technology.

Siemens bought out Duwag in the 1990s and have their manufacturing plant in Sacremento where they have made trains for a lot of other North American light rail systems such as Portland, Denver, Salt Lake City, Charlotte, Norfolk, San Diego, Edmonton, Minneapolis and Houston. The "SD" in the SD160 model stands for Siemens-Duwag.
