I don't know if anything changed post 9/11.

People used an event to consolidate power,
America got into ill-advised, expensive and possibly illegal wars,
the middle east is unstable
People are waxing about the decline of american power, morals, etc.
People are concerned about a loss of liberty due to technology

I think these general statements could be applied to any decade from the end of the 1950's onward.
