Lots of extra paperwork to fill out? Have to file a request for section B in the triplicate on the 14th floor of the file requisition department to allow for them to fine you and lock you up?
I kind of assumed that if you walked in and said you were guilty, that they could figure out how to do the punishment part without a lawyer.

I'm not really familiar with the criminal side of things, particularly the procedure stuff, but one thing I could think of off the top of my head would be making sure that what you are pleading guilty to actually corresponds with what you did. It's not ridiculous to think that the charge brought and plead to didn't fit the actions.
It seems like there's some procedural issue here that caused him to enter an initial not guilty plea, I don't know if that's an 'avoid responsibility' move or a result of the timing and process.
