Just want to give a shout out to The X-Files. Today is the 20th Anniversary of its debut on Fox. It was probably the first drama I actually enjoyed, and it became a tradition for me to watch it each Sunday night after The Simpsons. I remember my parents being mad at me so many Sunday night for refusing to go to bed before 11.
It had its ups and downs, but I have come to actually enjoy the downs (namely the Doggett years). Nothing could match the chemistry between Mulder and Scully, but I liked the change Patrick brought when he replaced Duchovny in season eight. The show had run a tad stale by the seventh season, and there are very few standout episodes in comparison to the preceding seasons.
Aside from the chemistry between the leads, the one thing I admired about the show is that it worked on so many different levels. Whether they wanted to create an emotional episode, thriller, horror, mystery, science fiction, or even a comedy the phenomenal writers managed to pull it off. In that aspect I don't think there was ever a show that could match that. Many of the best shows only managed greatness with one or two genres, but The X-Files were able to do the same using almost any style they desired. There are also countless shows that owe their existence to the show (Fringe, Lost, Criminal Minds, Supernatural, etc). During the 90's it was a standout among the heard, and to this day it remains one of the best shows of all time. Now if only they'd get around to giving the show the proper sendoff it deserves, and not the sadsack "I Want to Believe" movie they left is with.
