Usually when it cranks but won't start it's the battery. But by the way you're explaining the problem it seems you know a lot more about cars than I do, you've probably ruled that out.

Once my alternator went, and that caused the same sort of problem. It technically shouldn't, cause the alternator charges the battery, not starts the car, but for whatever reason in my car at the time it had the same effect.
