The biggest miss from that perspective is that it is still a full $500 subsidy phone (Parents usually don't like having to spend the $70/month that is necessary for full subsidy) and that they miss the $0 price point that is very important to this group.
For example the $0 iPhone 4 8GB has been driving alot of sales over the last 6 months even though there was a $99 4S option available.
The $0 in-store price point is very attractive for the group Apple was targeting with this device and they missed that.

They have it covered with the $0 4S, with the 5C and 5S tiered at $99 and $199, that is Apple's strategy. You are right though, time will tell how that pans out.
