The creators of M.A.S.H. were pretty insistent that the show be broadcast without a laugh track. They lost the battle with CBS executives, but managed to get a few concessions (there is no laugh track during operating room scenes, and a few episodes managed to get broadcast with no laugh track at all). It was a pioneer in that regard and I wish that more shows had caught on sooner
