It's unfortunate, but I don't think it's overly ridiculous at all. If you spent $700 on a laptop I don't think you can expect to get the same performance out of it 3 years later. That's just how technology moves these days. Each year new processors are brought in to do more work and not impact things like the battery. To be loading up the new operating systems and apps that use that power but not updating the phone itself you're going to run into problems.

A big complaint is that it's just visual, but from those I've talked to that have used it there's some great functionality upgrades as well. Airdrop for instance is something that iPhones have been sorely lacking for years. I'm very excited to be able to share between phones without needing to send a text message or email.
