If they had made that exact same trade a year or two later in their rebuild, it would've been fine and a great trade in my opinion. Nobody slams the Simmons + Schenn + Pick for Richards trade. That's because the Kings were in the appropriate time period in their rebuild to make a move like that.
As for Burke, I really do not like this move. I do not think that Burke is the right guy to build this team the right way, and I think the Flames have been making a lot of good moves since moving Iginla.
Wait and see is basically how I'm taking it. I just hope that they don't start firing people for no reason (they've been good recently)

this is my chain of thought also. Burke seems like a great guy to take a good team and get them to be great. I think the kessel trade was a massive miscalculation where he thought he had a decent team and that kessel would make them great. If the leafs were a playoff team when the trade was done then ya, i can see the thought process in giving up 2 x 1st rounders for a young scorer. A bad team, a team that was rebuilding should never be giving up a 1st rounder, let alone multiple in hopes of getting better (same can be said for the avs trade for varlamov).
I also question sending the 2 x 1st round picks and getting a guy like kessel back who has never shown promise to be a leader for face of a franchise type of guy.
In any case, i've been happy with feasters process with the flames roster once they went the rebuild route. i would love to have burke involved when the flames are on the cusp of being back in hte hunt for the playoffs (ie. a few years after some of our top prospects are in the NHL and ready to challenge for the playoffs). I am not sure about having both at the same time means best of both worlds is a given.
i'm not angry or negative about the decision. i'm a brian burke fan, and think he's actually a pretty smart hockey guy. the flames management team has a stronger management team than it did yesterday. just curious to see how they gel and get what should be a bottom tier team in the league back to respectability soon.
