No, I don't think glasses at a restaurant are sterile or anything, but they're clean enough that I'm not bothered in the slightest drinking out of one, with the exception of the scenario I've outlined in this thread.

To me this is odd. Your waitresses hands covered in fecal matter and bacteria are of far more risk to you than her hands coverd in the herpes virus. The only real difference is that you see on and dont see the other.
