It's both, actually. When you consider the number of season ticket holders, number of games and the fact that ticket books usually come as blocks of 2 or 4 tickets, so people with odd numbers of seats end up with blanks, then the difference is 16,000 plastic cards vs. 1 million printed tickets. Plus costs of artwork and design. Plus binding, etc. And they were printing the plastic cards anyway for the FanAttic discount. There is definitely a goal to save money.
Doesn't change the fact that the world is rapidly moving paperless and doesn't make this anything but a good idea. Making it easier to transfer tickets is the only real concern, and waiving the transfer fees is meant to help that this year. If they make the ticket transfer process easier to use - which I am doubtful of for this year, at least - this is pretty much a win all around.
