If we let Russia do this and shrug it off (under the guise of cultural relativism, perhaps), that would a negative message to possible gays NHLers (and it's far from guaranteed that there is one, unless you have info that I don't). Standing up to Russia is a supportive message. Which is the better country to be gay in, the one that calls out Russia's law or the one that doesn't? Opposing Russia's law advances gay rights everywhere, including here.
