I pointed out two specific passes that Cleverley made of some distance - one that was over forty yards down the right wing to pick out van Persie. Carrick did not make a single forward pass of more than five yards in the entire first half.
I don't understand what part of winning the ball and making passes that keep possession you think is "safe and boring". You remind me of hockey fans who thought Dion Phaneuf was a great offensive talent, ignoring the fact that his +/- was terrible because he left his defensive partner high and dry with many two-on-ones once Phaneuf lost possession of the puck in the offensive zone.
