However, it was an Austrian prison, not a Turkish one, and he only served four years.

If you ask me, that's a hell of a lot more interesting colour commentary than 'So-and-so is a great prospect who always gives 110 percent while playing a 200-foot game one shift at a time'.
I am sure it is true and the poster has their Euro prisons mixed up. And as was shown, Peplinski did just fine after that as far as getting broadcast time.

Obviously long before the internet, but I am sure Peplinski had sources or kept on top of the news. His stories and comments in game, wouldn't fly today; viewers are far too sensitive.

One noteable comment was, was when he lambasted a fan for getting hit in the face with the puck something to the effect of, "I don't mean to be insensitive, but it always seems to be some woman gabbing to her friend and not paying attention to the play on the ice that gets hit by the puck"

The fact that he would do Oilers games and Flames games as the color guy for CBC for those few seasons, let alone that 1991 series between the two, must have driven Oiler fans nuts given the pure hate he showed on the ice to that team in the 80's fighting Semenko, Hunter, McLellan etc.
