It had the makings of an epic scene for a flash back. But pretty much everyone has just come to accept the fact he is Neds ####### as other people have #######s and a big deal is not made about them. I also think that is why they are shifting the Gendry story a bit to draw focus on to that theme without the focus being on Jon.

They agreed early on that the best course of action was not to do flashbacks of any type. Perhaps the biggest omission was the Tower of Joy but I feel like the show was far more heavy handed in Jon Snow's heritage. When Jon went to the Wall and Eddard was going to King's Landing he was like next time we meet we'll talk about your mother. That was a pretty big "Hey guys, Jon Snow might have something special about his heritage here" clue. But then it was just pretty much left there and neither Rhaegar or Lyanna were talked about much at all.
Also about Christina Hendricks, I'm sure it's not a unique opinion but I think she would be good as Septa Lemore. I know her from Firefly more than anything and she was good at playing that two faced role as a coy young naive virgin when she was really a con artist. I think that parallels Lemore's ambiguous identity quite a bit.
