Billins (in his first year as a pro) stats are not quite as good as Smith's... playing the same system with the same teammates.

Billins was on a contract to Grand Rapids and so could not have been called up to play with the wings last season. And half of Billins first season was played in the super AHL where the best young NHL players were playing during the strike. ie Smith probably took away ice time and some scoring points from Billins in the first 32 games of the season
