For emails to come through immediately, turn on sync for that app and account. You might even be able to change if it pushes or just checks every x minutes, I can't remember for sure.

H&L: That's funny you mention the default app is bad because anything but the stock email app typically gives me way more problems with exchange accounts.
edit: Disregard, I totally forgot that I haven't used the stock Samsung email for almost as long as I have owned my phone. I am referring to whatever comes stock on AOSP ROMs.
