Hopefully peace prevails and the Syrians can live their normal everyday lives.
I went through Syria on my honeymoon 4 years ago... just a couple of whitey's going through Turkey/Syria/Jordan/Israel. I've never met more friendly locals travelling than in the Middle East... Syria especially.

One of my favorite memories was when we were in Homs, Syria and the wife wanted a coffee... so we went down the street to what we thought was a coffee shop, turns out it was just a place that sells/grinds coffee beans, only we didn't clue into that and their English was as good as our Arabic.

So after about 2 or 3 minutes of trying to explain to the dumb foreigners that they weren't a bloody Starbucks we finally got it and apologized and went to leave... only they wouldn't let us leave. They invited us behind the counter, ground up some coffee beans and made us coffee and served it to us. Then we sat around having a horribly broken conversation about football, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes.... I tried to give them money afterwards and they would just not take it. This is one of my favorite memories of the trip, but I have many others... they're just such a giving people and so accommodating.

I often still think about the people who ran that coffee shop and hope they're alright, but seeing as Homs was one of the original conflict points in this whole ####show, I have my doubts.
