As wrong as this might be; I think there is some confusion between cause and effect. The way you are looking at it, the guy said "I need some money for renos, how can I do it? I know, I'll sell my kid."
Whereas it's possible the guy found he was in over his head, started looking for a new home for his kid. He found somebody who was willing to adopt the kid, plus give him some money. Guy says to himself "I know, I'll use that money to do some work on the house that is overdue."
And to be honest when I saw the thread I thought you were looking for ideas for yourself, and I was going to say something like "You aren't using
both of your kidneys, are you?"
