I think the only reason Walt wouldn't run away and hide, despite that being the smart move, is because his ego is too big for that. He thinks he's too clever to get caught, and he's not afraid of Hank. We already saw how he confronted Hank directly, and then threatened him.

Well, they did already 'admit' untaxed gambling winnings. A move might put some questions into the system by friends and family.
Like I said first though, I think it's mostly a writing thing. It doesn't need to have a reason.
