When I tried windsurfing I rented a pretty sweet board and sail from UofC. Not sure how much it would cost you nowadays, but it certainly wasn't much money and enjoyable on the lakes.
Then I tried the ocean near Tofino.. got my @#$ handed to me
Still, great fun and even better exercise. Don't forget a wetsuit if you're headed to the west coast
