ok - i survived!!!!
i had no idea what to expect going into this ice time and was getting a little nervous becuz 20 minutes before we were to hit the ice i was still the only guy there. it ends up that this ice time was to help Dany continue to rehab his shoulder. so it was Dany, his dad Murray, another guy and me! that was it - just the 4 of us!
my wife came prepared to take pics but becuz he was still rehabbing his shoulder i thought i better ask before she took any pics. he preferred that we didn't and we respected that.
the ice time was pretty much breakaway drills on me. now, tell any of the guys on my mens team this and they'd just start laughing! i have a hard enough time stopping breakaways in div 4 in mens league and now i have to try and shut down a pro.... oh jeeze!!!!
i had an absolute blast and even with a 'tight shoulder' Heatley still had absolutely sick moves! there was a few times right in front of the crease that i was tempted to poke check him, but i didn't think it would be wise in case i took him out. one of the (many) goals he scored had him cut across me from my right side. he wired the shot. i stopped it with my blocker, but the puck went up, bounced off my helmet and then Dany batted it out of the air into the net. i looked up at him and said, 'REALLY?!?!' ....he just smiled!!
Dany was a great guy to chat with in the change room. i didn't really ask him any hockey questions. he was more interested in what i do for work becuz his dad is also in the same industry - so we had a bunch to chat about
on the way out of the rink we stopped to get some pics. him and i posed and then i scooped up my daughter to get her in on a pic. she took one look at Dany and started to wail!! ...not cry, whimper, sniffle... i'm talking full on with everything she had wail!! i looked at Dany and said, "sorry dude, she's a flames fan just like her daddy!" he burst out laughing, we shook hands and he took off!
