While i see the parallels, the biggest difference is the transition into the life of crime.

Walter's worsening condition with cancer and financial troubles pushed him into making meth. No doubt it was a reluctant choice as Walter had once left making meth but returned realizing he had less and less time to live and couldn't bear to leave a financial burden on his family.

I understand that Mike was trying to leave enough money for his granddaughter's future, but there was nothing that suggests that he was forced him into crime to make that money. Mike could've remained a cop or held multiple jobs. Even if he was blacklisted as being a cop, he could've worked in security for an honest employer and worked part time as a PI. He had so many choices but decided to take the easy way out. Much like how Jesse did when he saw his friend work as a bank mascot.
