I think it's because Mike was made into a sympathetic character by all the parallels between himself and Walt. His suggested honest beginnings and fall into crime. His love for family and the motive of providing for his grand daughters future with the accounts in her name. Even his eventual bonding with Jessie and going from thinking he's a complete waste and a lost cause to seeing his potential and trying to steer him right. Mike slowly gets revealed to be more than just a villian while at the same time Walt falls from noble intentions into becoming a villian himself.

Agreed. Just want to add, Mike also plays within the rules. Like the whole honor among thieves adage. Walt has shown that he's willing do anything to anyone at anytime, and has screwed people over many times. He's thrown pretty much everyone under the bus at one time or another.
They're both criminals, but one has more 'honor' than the other.
