Living downtown is good for a working Joe with an office job for a period in his/her life. I'd argue that would be for five to 10 years after graduating university and before kids come. And if you don't have kids, downtown living is good until maybe mid-50s. It's not as good for kids (and adults, as a result) as a residential area in the opinion of the overwhelming majority of Calgarians who choose to live in the 'burbs, members of CalgaryPuck notwithstanding.
This isnt even an answer, its just repeating almost exactly what I said.

Generally people move out of downtown when they have kids, then you trade the stress of your kids over to the stress of commuting.

All I said is that its a decision made based on different stressors that in no way reflects upon the quality of communities, let alone lakes.
