The question "Do you have kids?" is relevant because it provides insight into your frame of reference and scope of experience. A community should offer something to every age group, and this article - though obviously flawed - is at least trying (in spirit) to find the best community or to at least get people talking about it.
Living downtown is good for a working Joe with an office job for a period in his/her life. I'd argue that would be for five to 10 years after graduating university and before kids come. And if you don't have kids, downtown living is good until maybe mid-50s. It's not as good for kids (and adults, as a result) as a residential area in the opinion of the overwhelming majority of Calgarians who choose to live in the 'burbs, members of CalgaryPuck notwithstanding.
