With movies series like these, the quality of the previous movie tends to define how much money the following one makes (The first Austin Powers movie made
way less money than the following two). X3 made tons of cash based on the strength of the first two movies, while First Class happened after origins and X3.
First Class seems to have sat very well with fans and may have renewed faith in the series (I'm basing this entirely on the internets reaction, which has a pretty good track record for comic book movies), that, combined with the rising stars of Fassbender, Lawrence and the current market for gritty super-hero reboots, could add up to some serious box office mojo.
E: Liefield is terrible, but I really enjoyed his X-Force run.
