Living in a new city for 6 months then moving to a new city for 2 months on a cheap deal doesn't seem worth it for a guy that doesn't need money.
Why not just sign for a contender from the start and avoid the needless move and many, many losses?

Wants top minutes/top money
wont get it on a contender
As most have mentioned it makes perfect sense to come play top minutes somewhere and be traded at the deadline to play a lesser role but have a chance at a cup.
Who knows if he needs the money or just loved the game. One thing is for sure and that is he doesnt want to retire.
Im not saying the flames need to do it but it makes 100% perfect sense for him to go to a below average team for top dollar and head out at the deadline. Im also not sure what his family situation is but they must be fine with it or else he would be retiring!
