Your right, with a lot of these "Johns" its not as much about companionship as much as its about power. Similar to rape. Paying them for it probably makes them feel better about the act because they don't think about or care about where the money goes.
Its sex without love, or even like, there's no commitment to the girl, she's just an object.
I felt bad for the cops doing the stings in some of these shows where they talk about these guys picking up girls with baby seats in their car on the way to pick up their kids, and they just don't see it. There's a possibility that someday one of their daughters is going to be getting into the same kinds of cars with the same kinds of people.
I get it, sometimes as guys we go to the bar, get lucky and pick up a girl for a one nighter, but at least there's a connection there. There's the possibility of mutual satisfaction even if there's no long term thing. But at least you're not buying a human being and coming as close to rape as you can get for a few dollars.
I to an extent think that legalization could help if you can get rid of the pimps, make sure the girls get decent health care and access to counseling, and security against the predator Johns. But we are always going to have underground brothels for guys who want young girls or boys or want more then just sex with no consequences. We're always going to have sicko's going on the sex tours in asia so they can go after early teen kids.
Its called the worlds oldest profession, we as a society are never going to stop it, but at least we can try to prevent it from being as one poor girl called it "a career in hell"
