Think I'm gonna pick up the new macbook air tonight. Probably the base model but with 256 gb drive. Was debating on whether I needed 4gb or 8 gb ram but I think the 4 should be fine for my purposes.

I'd actually recommend you go with 8GB of RAM and here's why - you're not the power user that needs 8GB today, you are at the other end of the spectrum - you're a casual/typical user that hangs on to their gear for a long time (otherwise you'd have upgraded that plastic macbook a long time ago)
So you want to get that 8GB of RAM to make sure the laptop lasts you the 4+ years you are likely to hang on to it. Given that the Air is a nice, highly capable, well made machine, and that your macbook served you well until the swimming lesson, it's quite likely the Air will be a purchase you keep for a long time.
