my belief has always been that he's a skilled director, or at least a very good mimic of the Spielberg school of audience manipulation. but he's not good enough to overcome a bad screenplay, which he seems to attract with bizarre regularity.
contrast that with good old George, who was director, writer, caterer, etc. and you end up with the so-bad-it's-bad prequels. with JJ at the helm you have at least half the equation fixed, but if the story and dialogue are nonsensical eff-poop again, well it's screwed no matter what.

Abrams was also a producer on both films. He had a tonne of input on all aspects of both films. He didn't write the scripts but he approved them.
