Agreed that Kidd was ranked #1, but NJ obviously saw something that the Flames didn't -- otherwise they would taken Kidd at 11 instead of trading down to pick Brodeur at 20. In addition to #20, the Flames apparently had two early picks in the second round (#24 and #29), which could have been used to pick Brodeur (who I believe was targeted as an early second rounder -- behind Kidd and Felix Potvin).
To add salt to the wound, the Flames also acquired the 26th pick in that draft, in the Joey Mullen trade to Pittsburgh. They selected Nicholas Perrault, who ended up going to Michigan State and never played a game in the NHL.
