Time will tell if their plan will actually succeed, but "genius" is not the right word to use; 'obvious' would be a better word.

Marvel has had its fair share of flops: Ghostrider, Punisher, Elektra, Daredevil, etc..
DC also has more than just Superman/Batman. They have the Watchmen, Red, a Hstory of Violence, V for Vendetta, Constantine, Road to Perdition, etc..
