Brodie has developed into a serviceable top 4 d-man, I'm not sure why we should be afraid to commit long term.

I think they don't want to set the wrong example. If they sign Brodie to a multi-year deal based mostly half a season, it might backfire with other young players feeling they should get the same. Considering the amount of young players coming in right now to prove themselves, I'm not against setting the bar for a multi-year deal higher.
