Not a fan of their offseason signings. If you put Clarkson and Glencross's career stats next to each other you would see Glencross has been actually a more productive player. How good would Flames fans feel if Glencross had a $5.2 million cap hit until 2020? I like Glencross but if Feaster handed out that contract to Glencross we would be roasting him for it yet the Leafs are getting praised? I don't see this one ending well
Rob Vollman from Hockey Abstract thinks it's a big risk as well;
Quote:
David Clarkson, RW, Toronto Maple Leafs
7 Years, $5.25M/year | GVS minus-64.9
Much has been made of Clarkson's 30-goal 2011-12 campaign, but his six-season career high is otherwise just 17 goals and 32 points. A minimum even-strength scoring rate of 1.7 points per 60 minutes is typically required for a top-six forward, a level Clarkson has only occasionally grazed throughout his career.
Don't expect Clarkson to make up for his lack of offense with strong defensive play. Though a gritty, hard-hitting player, he has finished higher than 11th among New Jersey forwards in average quality of competition only once in the past five seasons (eighth in 2011-12), and has a combined 202 seconds of penalty-killing time over the past four. Add in Tyler Bozak's risky five-year, $4.2M/year deal (which just missed this list) and Toronto is taking some awfully big gambles in its bid to build off its recent postseason appearance.
