From what i have read over the years, agents and GM's do not lock themselves in a room to hammer out a deal. Most of the time it seems to be a bunch of 15 minute phone calls over days, weeks and months. I have never understood when GM's say we can now focus on "this player" now that "xx" is done. They don't have time for a 15 minute call in the offseason?

Likely just a negotiating tactic. Gives Brodie time to consider previous offers, and perhaps pressure his agent to get something done.
It also sends the message that the Flames have other things to worry about than getting desparate to sign a young RFA defenseman with one good season.
