It's not a large assumption at all, it's the obvious conclusion. There is no way either party expected Kovalchuk to play out that contract. His salary went from 10 million/year to 1 millon/year over four seasons. (10 - 7 - 4 - 1). If anyone involved with those negotiations had any expectation that Kovy would be wearing a Devils jersey in 2020-21, that person is a fool.
There is no fault here, nothing greasy, this is an individual making a personal choice and their employer recognizing the benefit in allowing them to make that choice and nothing more.
