Taking Savard's 4M out of the cap Boston currently has cap space left for this season of just over 2M.
If they don't get injuries and go with this line up the whole year Iginla's 6 M goes against this years cap.
If they are forced to over-spend the cap they have the 3.7 they can use from Iginla's "performance" bonus.
This is just so similar to the situation that the Flames were in in 2008-09 with Iginla in the Jokinen role. .... the superstar in decline.
This might work for Boston... although Eriksson and Iginla will not be an improvement over Seguin and Horton. And Bartkowski/Hamilton will not likely be be as effective as a #3/4 d-man as Ferrence.
BUT if they need to add players to their roster to cover 3-4 short term injuries and their cap cushion gets eaten away.... instead of them not being able to dress a full line up like the Flames got caught they will be left with Iginla using up cap space in 2014-15 while not playing for them.
Boston is so counting on Chara to be the best D-man in the world at age 37.
If he gets hurt or just falls off in play they will become the 2009-10 Flames that needed every thing to go correctly just to make the playoffs.
Boston is using short term tricks to stretch their time at the top until Chara fails.
