I liked them both. Arkham Asylum had the great atmosphere and story where Batman must infiltrate areas of the Asylum one by one, foiling the various villains along the way, all in one crazy night. You could sort of roam to different areas, but often the game pushed you towards the action.
Arkham City is very open. Instead of feeling like a single night of chaos, it is more like a few weeks of non-stop night, where you have a lot more freedom on what to do next. Side quests, story missions, or just goofing around beating up thugs around the city. Up to you. Grand Theft Batman.
So some felt that Asylum was maybe a bit tighter, and a better experience for it. But I can say that I had a great time taking City at my own pace, and wasn't too concerned about getting caught up in the plot.
Also, definitely play these with a controller.
