I think 4 years would be the worst term you could do, because you are letting the guy go to UFA at 27 which should put him in line for the biggest possible pay day. Not that Brodie compares to Hamhuis or Suter, but Nashville got those guys for good prices on 4 years second contracts....they lost two 27 year old defenceman for nothing 4 years later.
If you give him 4 years...it better be at 1.8 per year. So in that case your options are extend it a couple years to buy up a couple of those UFA years...or you shorten it to three years to give yourself a chance to hammer out a long term deal if need be a year before the player is UFA. At this point I haven't got enough info on Brodie to want to do a 5-6 year deal. You don't want to fall sucker for the Tom Gilbert thing where you pay a guy a lot of money over a long time after one season where he was a better player on a really bad team. Whereas the Kings have seen enough of a guy like Voynov to know he's a good player on a good team to commit to the longer term. The Roman Josi contract to me is a bit of a risk but given the Hamhuis and Suter scenarios, and Weber getting that massive offersheet, they may have felt it was less risky to committ 24 million now.
