Merit based contracts are still the way to go. Start handing out 8 year multi-million dollar contracts to players with 100 NHL games played like Brodie or a 24 year old forward with 60 points like Backlund, how would the Flames GM have any negotiation power when Baertschi, Monahan and friends are up for their contracts?
