I hate to be the negative nancy in this thread, but I disagree with that. He's 24 and has 62 points in the NHL. Had he filed for arbitration he could not have hoped for more than this.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good deal for everyone, and I hope Backlund breaks out like we expect him to. But tangibly there's not much to suggest he's worth more than this contract. When you start looking at players signed as RFAs with numbers comparable to Backlund there's far more making under 1.5M than over it. Maybe Backlund has more potential and promise than those player but arbitration ends up being far more numbers based than expectation based.
