This is from the Herald article on the charges being moved:

The Crown last week stayed assault and aggravated assault charges against Ferland, 21, then served him with a direct indictment on the same charges to the higher court to have them heard by a judge and jury.

Recently, the Crown has been issuing a lot more direct indictments - either before or during a preliminary hearing at provincial court - but has so far rarely direct indicted when the accused’s choice of trial is at the lower court.
Not fully sure what that means other than it gets a judge and jury trial and that they have being doing it more often lately. Doesn't say why they did it specifically in this case but one of the many Lawyers here probably know more about it.
