Two assault charges against Calgary Flames’ prospect Michael Ferland in connection with a bar fight in Cochrane last summer have been stayed, according to Alberta Justice records.

“It frustrates me to see that a court trial may be the only way to bring out the truth. Unfortunately, I can’t control what other people say or do. All I ask is that the police, the prosecutors and the court look at the evidence the same way they would if I wasn’t a professional hockey player,” said the statement, issued through Ferland’s lawyer.

Ferland’s lawyer, Michael Bates, said the defence was seeking additional witnesses. Bates said he’s aware of at least two witnesses who have alleged someone other than Ferland committed the assaults.

“It’s not surprising to me, as a criminal defence lawyer, the versions of what happened are many and varied,” he said.
