It could also be an arena announcement is on the way and the easiest way to pay for one is to have league minimum salary and hope the fans and corporate support keep paying inflated ticket prices to fund the new stadium.
From a hockey perspective I say its 50/50. One one hand why pay his salary if 2 years will be wasted on the rebuild, on the other hand it would be good to have a good player to play with young guys and give them confidence.
Not sure I would have wanted him if the off ice stories are true.
EDIT: Honestly I dont like the fact a bunch of businessmen who made/make their money from ranching and oil making hockey rebuild decisions. They should give their business a budget and allow it to operate within their budget.
Meddling owners do not make a good franchise in any league. The great thing about the Calgary Flames owners is they are known for not meddling. If this is a new trend then I for one think its disturbing.
