Now, if Shinkaruk and Poirier end up even, that's a win for Calgary because they took a guy offboard who they wanted and I'll be damned if they weren't justified in doing so.
But, if Shinkaruk ends up being better than Poirier, then the hindsight discussion is about how it wasn't hindsight at the time to pick Shinkaruk over the less highly touted Poirier.
I don't think that's irrational at all. I think attempting to claim a winner at this point is.
Based on the sweet-sweet youtube clips of this Poirier guy, I am more excited to watch him develop (or not) than I would be a guy like Shinkaruk with obvious tools and the question of 'does he put it together at the NHL level'.
There is definitely an argument to be made though if Poirier doesn't turn out and Shinkaruk does. Flimsy, maybe, but it's a legit.

Of course afterwards when the players are mature you can evaluate the picks, but even then there are dozens of players to take into account, not just this one guy who people are obsessed with for whatever reason.
I think sometimes media people act childish when someone who they thought was highly valued gets passed on by teams.
While Mckenzie practically predicted that Florida might take a center too, Pierre McGuire acted like not picking Jones was a personal insult against him. Some of these people are a little weird.
