Here's the thing: If Shinkaruk ends up being better than Poirier, there is a legitimate gripe because consensus was that, regardless of precisely where you thought they would go, Shinkaruk was the more solid pick.
Now, if Shinkaruk and Poirier end up even, that's a win for Calgary because they took a guy offboard who they wanted and I'll be damned if they weren't justified in doing so.
But, if Shinkaruk ends up being better than Poirier, then the hindsight discussion is about how it wasn't hindsight at the time to pick Shinkaruk over the less highly touted Poirier.
I don't think that's irrational at all. I think attempting to claim a winner at this point is.
Based on the sweet-sweet youtube clips of this Poirier guy, I am more excited to watch him develop (or not) than I would be a guy like Shinkaruk with obvious tools and the question of 'does he put it together at the NHL level'.
There is definitely an argument to be made though if Poirier doesn't turn out and Shinkaruk does. Flimsy, maybe, but it's a legit.
